Jim was born during WWII, and grew up in Washington, DC. The son of a Government Civil Servant who by avocation was an accomplished draftsman, print maker, and painter, Jim was also the nephew of the famous Kansas artist, art teacher, and monumental sculptor Bruce Moore. During his early years he was constantly spending time with his father in all of the great art museums of DC, and in his uncle's studio where he was steeped in the history, appreciation, and processes of art in general, and the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture.
He left home after two years study at George Washington University, and spent 8 years in the US Navy Nuclear Power Program, serving as an Instructor in Idaho, and aboard a Polaris submarine in the Western Pacific. He and his wife returned from Hawaii in 1970 to the University of New Mexico where he obtained his engineering degree. As an Energy Business Executive and Management Consultant, he traveled the world in a career which spanned the past 35 years. Having lived in England, France and the Netherlands for 8½ years and 3 years consulting in Ireland, South Africa and China from his home in Boston, he and his wife retired to Idaho Falls in 2004, where he has continued to draw and paint.
His artistic work has been profoundly influenced by not only his early experience and training, but also by his international travels, and while working and living overseas. He has become more and more proficient in many media including: pencil and pen and ink drawing, watercolor, print making and acrylics.
Jim has a keen eye for the scene, the steady draftsman’s hand for line and line detail, and a mastery of perspective and color. In all his work, the play of line and form, light intensity, and color contrast are combined to create a special reality.
